Our Mission

We believe people find common ground and shared humanity when they learn about and really “see” each other. Our mission is to bring people closer, building a more compassionate, empathetic world through curated, reciprocal interviews.

Where it all Started

We first came up with the idea for The Interview Game (TIG) in 2018, as a way to bring people closer together. One of the most powerful ways to build healthy connections is by asking questions that reveal someone’s inner world.

The concept behind The Interview Game—fostering interpersonal connections using  one-on-one reciprocal interviews—grew organically in Boulder, Colorado.

It began among a group of friends raising kids in Boulder. We all had healthy parents (our kids’ grandparents) alive and well but living thousands of miles away. Collectively, we felt responsible for depriving our kids and parents from each other’s presence. And we became determined to keep the essential intergenerational bond between our grandparents and grandchildren intact.

We quickly learned of various platforms for documenting interviews with elders (i.e. StoryCorp does exceptional work), and tried fun social games (such as Vertellis and What’s Your Word?). But we were looking to create something deeper, a closeness and intimacy present almost exclusively in one-on-one settings.

We started experimenting with reciprocal Interview Games, sharing initial drafts with friends and colleagues, welcoming their input, and inviting them to share and include their friends and families in the process. We asked psychologists, teachers, parents, grandparents, and kids of all ages to play and their response was unabashed enthusiasm and support, an outpouring of insights and recommendations.

Once people played The Interview Game, they wanted to stay involved and ultimately created a community committed to “seeing each other.” Word of mouth quickly spread, garnering grassroot support for our mission from all corners of the globe.

In April of 2020, we were set to launch four Interview Game booklet editions, and were scheduled to hold public events at churches, community centers, bookstores and schools that invited us to demonstrate and offer The Interview Game to multiple generational audiences. COVID-19 altered these plans.

By June, we shifted to offering Video Chat editions, allowing anyone with WiFi, a web-enabled device and 60 minutes to connect deeply and safely with family and friends anywhere. In November, we introduced our first ‘group’ games for entire Families and groups of Friends play together.

From the beginning, our mission has always been to help create  “a better, more compassionate, empathetic world; made possible by truly “seeing each other.”

The pandemic did not change this mission one bit, but with growing isolation and loneliness—particularly for elderly and fragile populations—this mission is now more urgent than ever. Please join us!
